There have been many words written about 9/11 in the last month. This post will add a few more. The picture above was published in the Washington Post on 9/11/11, and shows just a few of the names that are recorded in bronze at the memorial site in New York. The conrast to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC, is striking. At the Vietnam Memorial the names are listed aphebetically -- strictly A thru Z. In contrast, at the 9/11 site, the names are linked into groupings. The names of airplane flight crews, Pentagon co-workers, or firemen from Engine Company 205, are listed together in bronze, just as they were associated in life.
This strikes me as an extraordinarily gentle and sympathetic way of organizing information. After all, in a graveyard we are usually buried next to those who were connected to us in life, most commonly by family group. Those who have organized this memorial, have done it in a very sensitive way. They are to be commended.
